Nitro? What’s That?
These gas powered RC cars use a unique type of fuel called ‘nitro‘ which is a mixture of
- Nitro methane
So you can’t be putting just regular ol’ gasoline in these special engines. But, not to worry, you can get everything you need to operate these vehicles by simply getting a package deal from an online retailer. With a package deal, you’ll get thebatteries, battery charger, fuel, cleaner, a wrench and a fuel bottle to help you apply to fuel into the engine. Oh, did we mention you also get free shipping with that deal?
One gallon of fuel equals hours upon hours of run time. So instead of electric RC cars that need constant recharging and are generally slower, these cars allow you to maintain top speeds with minimal time in the pits after adding the appropriate fuel!

You Can Let ‘Em Rip! – On Road Or Off
If you’re dying to get your RC car out of the ‘burbs and into some more challenging terrain, Nitro-fuelled RC cars are also available in a wide variety of trucks and off-road buggies. With grippy tire treads and wheelie bars, RC nitro trucks and buggies offer wide suspensions to allow them higher ground clearance – perfect for bumpy terrain and rock crawling! These trucks also reach top speeds of 65 mph+… just imagine that off a sweet jump!
Regardless of your experience level, gas powered cars or trucks are easy and simple to use. Furthermore, many beginners find that they enjoy the extra power under the hood that nitro fuel provides.
Everything You Need To Know About Choosing An RC Nitro Car
Want to know a little secret? The truth is… it’s not that difficult to get into the RC car hobby. You can get all RC cars and trucks RTR (ready-to-run) – so they’re ready to go straight out of the box! With just a little time out in the field or on the street, you’ll be just as good as anyone else.
Now, the best way too choose an nitro car is to determine whether you want to use them for on-road, or off-road purposes (or both!).
Street cars (also referred to as Sedans), like the Traxxas Nitro 4-Tec 3.3 are great for first time buyers (75mph). Off-Road nitro trucks, like the HPI Savage X, is one of the best trucks for beginners because you can smash it, bash it, jump it and roll it… and it will still keep rippin’ across rough and bumpy terrain! Durability is it’s middle name.
If you’re looking for an RC car that can go on-road and off-road - then we recommend the Traxxas Jato 3.3! The Traxxas Jato is simply the best all around vehicle, and running at speeds over 65mph, it will definitely impress at the very sight of it!
Everything You Need To Know About Maintaining Your RC Nitro Car
Ok, so now you’ve received your nitro car in the mail – what now? If you go with a company such as HPI Racing or Traxxas, what you’ll get with your nitro car or truck is a DVD and instruction manual. The manual or DVD will clearly outline to you how to properly use your nitro car. It contains information on how to maintain, clean, tune and upgrade your vehicle.
You can also learn how to tune your nitro engine.
Just like a regular car, a nitro RC car needs to be broken in. The instructions will show you how to do that, and you’ll notice after a few runs that your nitro car will start performing better. The engine needs some heating up and practice first before you can be functioning at the vehicles full potential.
The biggest mistake first time users, and even professionals make, is not reading the instructions. These aren’t the type you can ignore!
After a few uses, make a quick inspection of your vehicle – check to see if everything is in place. You may need to tighten or clean your rc car components. Read more below for more information, pictures, reviews and videos of RC nitro cars.

Demand Quality – Choosing The Right Brand
Nitro fuelled models are also offered by all of the major RC car brands and providers. As competitive RC racing becomes more popular, there is a higher demand for the fastest RC cars available. Nitro also leaves more room for customization, and you’ll be able to order more types or RC car parts for them as well. To keep up with this demand, all of these brands offer a wide selection of Nitro-fuelled remote control cars and trucks…
With these brands you know that you’re going to get nothing but quality, especially since they’re used by professionals as well.
But, with quality also comes look. What’s the point of having an ugly fast car? That’s why you can get nitro cars in different types of models like…
- Dodge Viper
- Ford GT
- Mini Cooper
Driving around a Lamborghini that can go just as fast as a regular vehicle, with thesame look, for the fraction of the price is sure to keep the kids happy (or you!).
Safety, Handling and Storage
You also might be thinking to yourself, are these gas RC cars safe? Yes, they do go fast, but as with all matters, the person driving these vehicles has to take a degree of discretion and responsibility when racing these around in public places. Any driver under the age of 12 should be supervised by an adult.
Also, be careful not to run them into any walls, trees, etc – a nitro car going 50mph+ straight into a tree is obviously going to take some damage!
When winter comes and you’re storing your RC nitro car – be sure to empty the tank of any fuel – as well as oil, etc. Store your fuel on top of cardboard and in a cool, dry area to keep it fresh for longer. Make sure to take out any batteries, and discharge the batteries for storage. You can learn more about batteries and how to discharge them at the RC car batteries page. When racing season comes again, you’ll want to fill your tank with a fresh batch of fuel.
